CT Fertility utilizes the Bedford Spar/ HIV protocol to treat affected men wishing to achieve biological parenthood.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is of the opinion that IUI with sperm from an HIV infected male has not been proven absolutely safe, a concern shared by Bedford scientists.
Therefore specimens collected through SPAR are used only for in vitro fertilization (IVF) but not intrauterine insemination (IUI).
It is also important to remember that SPAR is designed as a clinical trial. The current protocol calls for the use of frozen quarantined sperm obtained from two specimens with an undetectable viral burden for each conception attempt, and for the female partner (or surrogate) to have herself tested for HIV-antibody at 3 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months following each and every pregnancy attempt.
