Each April countless men, women, and children answer the call to raise awareness during National Infertility Awareness Week, founded by RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association. They walk, fundraise, tweet, post, and share. While this outpouring of support is wonderful, the other 11 months of the year could use a little infertility awareness love, too.

If you or someone close to you is struggling with infertility, #HaveAHeart and make 2018 all about raising awareness of this challenging condition. Michele Faust, RN, BSN – Clinical Manager of CT Fertility in Trumbull, CT shares some tips on how to get started.

Shout It From the Rooftop

You may not want to take that particular approach, but each shared story of infertility chips away at the stigma surrounding it bit by bit. Infertility isn’t your fault. It’s not your husband’s fault. It’s not your best friend’s fault. Rationally, you know that, yet many people still have feelings of shame. The fact is, 1 in 8 couples struggle to build a family. It’s pretty clear that more people experience it than talk about it.

Sharing your story, or inspiring someone else to share theirs, helps start conversations. And conversations lead to greater understanding, support, and change.

Education is Key

Learn all you can about your reproductive health. Getting a clear understanding of how your body works and the cause of your infertility is empowering. It also helps you have meaningful discussions with your health care providers, and it enables you to answer questions that may come up as you’re out there raising infertility awareness. If you have any questions for which you can’t find answers, Michele Faust, RN, BSN – Clinical Manager of CT Fertility can help.

Give, or Get Others to Give

There’s no reason you have to wait for National Infertility Awareness Week to donate time or money to this meaningful cause. Donate to RESOLVE to help them improve lives and access to care for those trying to build a family. Encourage others to donate as well, or organize a fundraiser where people can get together and have a good time while raising both funds and infertility awareness. Golf tournaments, bourbon tastings, food truck events, movie nights, 10,000 steps challenges…there are so many fun ways to get people together, entertain them, and encourage them to give from the heart.

Raising awareness of infertility is vitally important and aids with everything from research, to support, to legislation. Kick off the New Year right by committing to doing all you can to raise awareness in 2018. Contact CT Fertility at 203-373-1200 for more information on how you can make a difference.
